His Life and Legacy
(SP4) Private First Class Willis Clarence Pickens Jr., was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on
November 18, 1944 to Willis Pickens Sr and Mamie Odessa Pickens.
Willis will always call New York Home. He graduated from Boys and Girls High School in
June 1965. In September 1965 he joined the United States Army. During his time in the army,
he served as a Screaming Eagle with the 101 Airborne in the Vietnam war, awarded the
Parachute badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and was honorably
discharged with the distinguished Purple Heart in 1971. He went on to work for the United
States Postal Service until retirement in the early 2000s. Willis was proud of being of service to
his country and this pride was only eclipsed by the love he had for his family. He married his
wife Rosland Pickens and moved down to Garfield Georgia to enjoy their retirement. Willis is
survived by his family and loving friends.
