It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John C. Young Sr. who peacefully left this world on January 12, 2025, at the age of 94. A husband, father, grandfather, and friend, John lived a life full of love, wisdom, and compassion. He was surrounded by his family in his final moments, and his legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born on April 23, 1930, in Burke County, Georgia to parents Mustgrow and Catherine Young, John C. Young Sr. spent his childhood learning in its public schools. As a young man, he embarked on a journey that would define the rest of his life. He was married to his beloved wife, Lucy Mae Young, with whom he shared many wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised eight children: four daughters, Dorothy Williams of Millen, Brenda Young of Atlanta, Sandra Young-Mayes of Augusta, and Gloria Jean Sawyer of Nassau, Bahamas, as well as five sons, Donald Young, John Young Jr., and Christopher “Eric” (Clara) Young all of Millen, Carl (Deandrea) Young of Midville, and Al (Joyce) Young of Swainsboro.
John made a life as a cement mason and construction worker having had worked at both Fluor Daniel and Plant Vogtle. His passions included hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, and storytelling. He was known for his larger-than-life personality, imagination, and dedication, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer wise counsel. His life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the importance of family.
John is proceeded in death by his wife, parents, siblings: Annita Jackson, Tommie Young, Alma Tuff, Paul Young, Norris Young, O’Neal Young, Catherine Riles, Inward Young, Corrine Bryant, Carrie Brayboy, Matthew Young, as well as a son-in-law Benjamin Mayes II and a daughter-in-law Regina Young.
He also leaves to cherish his memory his grandchildren: Carron Williams, Teron Williams, Ashlon Williams, Jas’mine Williams, Sophila Young, Al Young Jr, Javon Young, Alonzo Clark, Candice Young, Marquez Young, Jade Jenifer, Benjamin Boone Mayes III, Kennedy Mayes, April Finlayson, Brandon Bailey, Brian Bailey, Shantell Cross, and Angela Edwards. Great-grandchildren include: Samaya Tyler, Charlecia Aikins, Ashlon Williams Jr., Destiny Willis, Kaili Williams, Isaiah Cooper, Leandre Cooper, Ashley Cooper, Marley Cuyler, Jacorryun Williams, Aidan Young, Alyanna Williams, Xzandria Young, Jada Young, Jaden Young, Quadden Young, Josiah Williams, Zane Phelps, Jamari Young, Ava Young, Kingston Crosby, Erica Young, Agera Young, Danai Young, Porter Williams, Basil Jenifer, Lennox Rose Williams, Montrez Young, Sawyer Williams, Ja’Niyah Cross, Braydon Bailey, Kaidon Bailey, Zandon Bailey, Jaden Edwards, Landon Edwards, Makayla Bailey, Zykira Bailey, Miracle Bailey, Brandi Bailey, Kevin Bailey, two great-great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law Lucille Young as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Though we mourn his passing, we take comfort in knowing that his love and legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
