Mrs. Jewel "Riggs" Giles
Born on November 12, 1944 in Emanuel County, Mrs. Giles is the eldest daughter of the late Dea. Daniel Lester and Lou Anna Riggs. She transitioned peacefully on May 23rd, 2024..
She attended Cross-Green School, Summertown Elementary School, and is a 1962 graduate of Emanuel County High School in Swainsboro, Georgia.
Mrs. Giles furthered her education at Fort Valley State College (now University), receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science Education and a minor in French in 1966. Her teaching positions included Tattnall County High School in Reidsville, Georgia, Robert Smalls, Jr. High School in Beaufort, South Carolina and Ridgeland Middle School in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Following many years of dedicated service as an educator, Mrs. Giles decided to change her career path and became the Assistant Director and Counselor at the Savannah Runaway Home. She enjoyed helping teenagers find their way in life.
On June 9, 1971, Jewel married Daniel W. Giles, Sr. and to their union three lovely children were born: Mercredi (Fred) Cloud of Savannah, Georgia; Candice (Derrick) Ussery of Fayetteville, Georgia; and Frank Lester (Dethra) Giles of Conyers, Georgia. Also left to cherish her memory are eight grandchildren: Vendredi Godfrey, Joicille Cloud; Israel, Dazhir, Naima and Matè Ussery; Jairah and Daniel Giles. Her love was extended to five step children: Sylathia Giles, Gaye Giles, Daniel Giles, Jr. Kimberley Miles and Angelina Fuller. Also included are several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
Left to mourn Jewel's passing are two devoted sisters: Mrs. Clara R. Slater of Augusta, Georgia and Dr. Louvincey Dewitt (Collis) Brown of Lithonia, Georgia. A sister, Gussie Faye Riggs, preceded her in death. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also remain.
Mrs. Giles is a member of the Eden Primitive Baptist Church of Cobbtown, Georgia. Locally, she frequently served at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Savannah. Having touched many lives, Mrs. Giles will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Her lifes's mission and work are exemplified by Colossians 3:23, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." (NIV)
