Gerald Rodrigus Phillips was born June 8, 1970, to the late Jinnie V. Phillips and Wilbert Phillips. Gerald attended Swainsboro High School and Paine College. While attending Paine College, he was chosen as "Freshman of the Year" in basketball. He also led Paine College to a SIAC Championship and was a member of Paine College Hall of Fame.
He spent the early part of his life working with his father learning to be a brick mason. He was later employed with Interfor and worked as a scaler until he became disabled. He was united in holy matrimony to Sabrina Harris on March 6, 2016.
