Farlyn Hudson Obituary

On May 22, 1963, Farris M. Hudson, Sr. and Jewel Miller Hudson were blessed with a bundle of joy that they called “Farlyn”.

Farlyn was a very loving, intelligent, caring, strong, and dedicated individual from an early age. These traits followed her throughout her life.

She was educated in the Jefferson County, Georgia School System, attending Carver Elementary School and the former Wadley High School. She continued her education and received her bachelor’s degree from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. Farlyn always prided herself in obtaining excellence and performing community service, which led her to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and graduate as Magna Cum Laude in 1986 from Paine College.

Farlyn always had a passion for science and started her career as a biology teacher at Butler High School. She would later elevate to the position of research scientist working on numerous research projects at Veterans Affairs Research Lab. After many years at the Veterans Affairs Lab, she moved to the Medical College of Georgia and worked many years in research, becoming a well-known published scientist in her field. Medical publications were just a few of her accolades. She also was a part of groundbreaking research that would change the lives of many working on collaborative projects with the University of Georgia and Augusta University. Following her publications and numerous research projects, Farlyn eventually was promoted to the Assistant Biological Safety Officer of the Medical College of Georgia, later known as Augusta University. Throughout her career as a healthcare professional and published scientist, Farlyn also was an active member with the Jefferson County Board of Education for more than 12 years representing District 1.

Farlyn was not just a well accomplished scientist and philanthropist, she also was a daughter, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Farris and Jewel Hudson; her brother, Farris M, Hudson, Jr., and her brother-in-Law, Earl Williams Sr. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her children, Faraji T. H. (Jessica) Prator and Farath J. H. (Crystal) Prator; her sisters, Lazelda Williams, Phrashunda Hudson, and Shawana Lynn (Donovan) Lewis; her grandchildren Mehira Cummins-Prator, Neveah Prator, Semaj Prator, Blake Linhardt, Major West, Brayden Prator, and Jayci Prator; a sister-in-law Verna Hudson, her godchildren Mariah, LaShonda, and Lonnie Hill III.  She has a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives and friends. She loved her parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren with all her heart. Farlyn did anything to see them all smile and always brought light to the room when she entered. She will forever be remembered in her families' hearts and minds as a beautiful soul.
